It has been a great start to a new year! I have been slow at keeping up with this blog, tracking the conundrums I get myself into as I try and work “work” and build the Institute. Well, a funny thing happened – I have decided to combine the two! That’s right, I am standing up in the third row and saying “Hello. My name is Tony (*Hello Tony*) and I’m a fixed income addict.” Of course, just as in the metaphor I’m using there had to be an event that pushed me in to acknowledgment – the company I was working at for teh last 2.5 years, had to close down. Now mind you, I’ve been in other companies before where departments were closed, initiatives were completed or the company otherwise changed course. But this time I just cannot fathom placing all of my financial well being in the hands others; where I have limited to no say at all. So, the enabler is gone.
“I really believe I have a lot to offer and games are going to be an important tool in sharing this with everyone.” *Glad you’re here Tony*
I am not trying to ignore who I am anymore and all of the things that I enjoy and need to share. I also however, am not naive enough to think that this pronouncement is enough to pay the bills. I will be working along 3 fronts;
1. Public Education. I am getting involved in the school systems locally. There is a lot of opportunity to assist teacher and departments in the school accomplish their mission. There is a woman in our area doing a great job with a program of in-school “field trips” for Kindergarten and 1st grade. to begin with, I am offering and after school program at 4 local elementary and intermediate school starting at the end of the month. This 8 week course will take students through a short survey of different game types, that, without making a big deal of it to the kids, will have a focus on critical thinking, social skills, math skills and problem solving. Half of these will be institute games. There will also be time set aside along the way for them to design and create their own board games to take home at the conclusion of the course.
2. Home Schooling. I am just getting started here and will be trying to attend some local and regional home schooling expo/conventions. Need to identify the best avenue for me to participate and add value or convenience for families and home schooling co-ops.
3. Business. This is being pursued through Ripley Solutions Group. There is a separate website for that. The objective here is to leverage my computer science degree and 20+ years in the software and IT industry, Military service and church mission service experience for smaller local companies through consulting, seminars and workshops. Games will be an important tool. Some for team building, others, custom made, for training new operations, methodologies or even training for certifications.
This Blog will primarily keep up with 1 and 2 as they support and build the Institute. However, I expect some nice overlap with number 3. A good example of that is the Gamealogical institute Triathlon. I have developed and communications and team building seminar around it.
Well, I can’t catch you up on everything at once in this posting. So, until it “my turn again”,
Onward,
Tony
