First stop was Tuscaloosa on 4/9. We had a good turn-out and strong support for the tour concept. I twas hard to find a decent sized location in Tuscaloosa; everything is small or really big. I am working closely with the good folks at Crimson Castle.
The rest of the tour for this year will be:
5/21 – Rickwood Caverns park
Summer – Huntsville
October – Birmingham
In the past it was fun pushing my games and meeting organizers and other game enthusiasts, but it was also a poor way to make any money. In the end I really had to look at my time at the cons as enjoying the hobby, but not getting to play too much other than my games. So this Tour lets me keep organizing (I actually do enjoy that) but getting to do a lot more playing and not concerned about game sales. And i am really providing a service that folks want or they wouldn’t be coming!
I am also invited to PlayOn Con to provide Gamealogical events and at GameCon Memphis I will be helping with the Educational Track and having fun.
Onward,
Tony

My how things change…for the better at least.
So, I have become gainfully employed, again, with a salary and benefits (after the waiting period of course) and all the peace of mind that provides to the spouse and family; which is of course one of my primary responsibilities. So that is a pretty good thing.
Where does that leave the GI? Well, lets review a few things that I have learned over the last year or so. 1) I can create good games. There are plenty of folks who enjoy them and even purchase them. I will not make a lot of money with my games; not when I am doing batch runs of 10 to 20 each at a time. But it is is fun and rewarding. So game design, development and releases will always be a part of the institute. 2) I really like seeing people getting together and having a good time and I can successfully organize modest sized gaming events. There were 2 megameetups last year that were both well attended and I was encouraged to keep them going. These are also more profitable than selling games one or two at a time. 3) It is fun going to Cons and meeting new folks and getting the Gamealogical name out there, but for the time and effort, setting up my booth may not be the best route. I will be better of holding demos and otherwise enjoying the convention. Unless of course I can become a “guest” of one sort or another that can bring a Gamealogical Zone to the event and get paid for doing that…
Well, that brings us back to “I have a full time job now”. Thus, I am organizing the 2011 MegaMeetUp Tour d’Alabama. It will go from Tuscaloosa (April 9th) to Huntsville (Summer) and have a big finish in Brimingham (October). There is even a small push to make it a 3 day event in Birmingham. For the other cities it is their first MMU so they are just going to be 1 day events.
We’ll just have to keep the GI rolling and see where the adventure takes us!
Onward!
